The Chocolate Wrapper - 2014 Finish Line Singletrack Mind Series R5 Event Report

24 October 2014

Dear Singletracker

Orange never fails to impress which is why we chose to have it host the finale of the Finish Line Singletrack Mind Series for the second year in succession. And again we were blessed with flowing, grippy trails and perfect weather! Massive thanks to the Central West Off Road Bicycle Club (CWORBC), you make our job easy and put big smiles on everyones dials!

Thanks also to Orange City Council for their support of the event, we literally couldn't have run this without them so big thanks to the Mayor and all who work to make Orange a great place to run events.

There were plenty of other things to be stoked about too, we gave away over $12,000 of cash and prizes, loads of competitors enjoyed tasting James Estate wines in the warm afternoon sun, and the Bioathletic ice bath and recovery services were again a great hit - the ice bath had tired legs in it from midday right though to after the 7 hour finished. It great that not only our competitors are using the services, but learning the value of recovery methods such as the use of foam rollers.

There were plenty of great battles throughout the day and you can read up on all the racing news on MTBA.

We are so lucky to have such awesome support from sponsors and services at the events and we're sure it's appreciated by competitors and spectators alike. The event centre was full of displays - James Estate Wines, SRAM, Rockpool Graphics, Grimm-Hewitt and Bioathletic. Orange's DG Cycles provided expert bike shop support, Snax on Trax yet again kept us fed and caffeinated, and the big props to the Short Circuit Cancer crew - we feel privileged that you have chosen our Series to help promote your fundraising for cancer research.

Congratulations to all the category winners and place getters for their awesome efforts, recieving cash and prizes from our fantastic sponsors Finish Line, SRAM, Avid, RockShox, Truvativ, Serfas, Bellwether, Deuter, Cycology, Hammer Nutrition, James Estate, Rockpool Graphics, Kobie, Aussie Butt Cream, Mountain Biking Australia magazine, Ventou Cycling Wear, Cycle & Fitness Studio, Ritchey and Grimm-Hewitt!

Thanks and congratulations go to our Serial Offender draw winners, Marisa Bertoia and Ian Bridgland who were each awarded a trophy and a SRAM X0 rear derailleur worth over $300, and Cory Dimmer won a lovely Grimm-Hewitt original artwork worth $500! We're stoked to see the growing number of people attending each round - thanks for your support. Congratulations also to our other prize draw winner, Ray Giddins, who won a set of SRAM Elixir brakes!

Huge congratulations to our Series winners and placegetters, it's been fantastic to see such consistent competition throughout the Series. Thank you for supporting the Series.

Chocolate Foot Women's MTB Development Team

With the series honours on the line everyone brought their A-game and it was set to be a tough day out for our Women's MTB Development team.

In the 7hr, the 'Fairy Penguins' team took the win the Female Pairs category and sealed their overall win of the category! The 'Pocket Rockets' got off to a strong start but with one of the team still recovering from surgery, fatigue set in and they slipped to 4th place. 'Fairy Penguins' team member Linda has written a blog about the day's racing here.

In the 4hr, Mel's battle with the tenacious Eva Boland continued, but this time with Canberra gun Brooke Rowlands in the mix. There was little surprise to see Brooke dominate the category while Eva had the form to hold 2nd place which was enough to take the overall win for the series while Mel placed 4th behind Berry rider Bel Althaus on the day, but 2nd overall for the series. Monika took on her first 4 hour solo effort and learned plenty about the solo game plan vs riding hot laps in a team.

We're super proud of how hard the team have worked to improve, develop their skills and racecraft. They've all exceeded our expectations! We'd love you to check out the Team Website which includes rider profiles, blogs and info about their very generous sponsors.

Putting our best foot forward …

With our race season done for the year it's time for us now to get serious about planning for 2015 and importantly, riding! We're already entered for two enduro events in New Zealand and we're looking forward to testing the lungs and legs in events like the WSMTB 4 Hour series. We'll also release details of the 2015 Finish Line Singletrack Mind Series and some new things we're working on.

There's plenty of fun to be had this spring and summer and we hope to catch you all out on the trails!
