The Chocolate Wrapper - 2013 SRAM Singletrack Mind Series Round 2 Event Report

Dear Singletracker

Round 2 of the SRAM Singletrack Mind Series is destined to be quite memorable for a variety of reasons, not the least being the wind and dust that got into everything and everywhere while conditions in the forest were delightfully calm and perfect for racing! It'll also be remembered for the HUGE field that was entered, a big roll up of Clydesdales (a lady included!), gobs of singlespeeders, the Short Circuit Cancer crew doing great things for cancer research and well ... that very unique family the Millington's not only entered an all-family team in the Fab Fours, Dad Justin raced in a Spiderman suit and Mum Sophie was kind enough to shave off her son Lance's eyebrows ... with the free Schick razor. Needless to say we gave him a nice prize for his sacrifice but can only imagine the comments he's getting at school! While the racing on track was fast and super close, the kiddies race was a real highlight! With so many kids we had to split it onto 3 categories and the racing was intense! Joe's commentary got very biased when his cousin's son Darcy hit the lead and took the over-7 boys race convincingly!

Check out the media release on for the low down on the "big kids" battles throughout the day.

Our fantastic sponsors supported the event with displays and services from SRAM Neutral Service, Giant, Mountain Biking Australia magazine, Finish Line and James Estate Wines. We are so lucky to have such awesome support at the events and we're sure it's appreciated by competitors and spectators alike. Thanks also to SITA Australia, Shoalhaven Water and Schick for their assistance with this event - we hope you're enjoying using your new Schick razors!

Congratulations to all the category winners and place getters for their awesome efforts, walking away with over $11,000 in cash and prizes from our fantastic sponsors SRAM, Avid, RockShox, Truvativ, Serfas, Bellwether, Deuter, Giant, Cycology, Hammer Nutrition, James Estate, Aussie Butt Cream, Frameskin, Mountain Biking Australia magazine, OnTheGo, Finish Line and Flow Mountain Bike! Congratulations to local rider Diana Tooley for walking away with the draw prize of a SRAM Rise 40 wheelset worth over $600!

We know you're all stars and proving that is that you're all going to be TV stars as well! WIN TV have their finger on the pulse of what's cool and sent a camera crew to shoot a report on STM Round 2 at Nowra, it'll be on WIN News in the Illawarra this Wednesday night - 6pm! Set a reminder Illawarra/Sth Coast peeps and if someone could record and Youtube it we'd be very appreciative!

Results, Photos & Reports

Preliminary results, including Female & Male 20 fastest laps, are up on the website. Please take a look and get in touch if anything is incorrect! Updated Series Points will also be posted on the website soon.

You can find some blogs and reports from the race all collected here, plus some competitor & supporter feedback.

Event photographer and lensman extraordinaire Dave Bateman took some fantastic shots – which we've received from Dave, but unfortunately a technical issue has prevented us from showcasing them in our Gallery. They will make their appearance later this week. And once they do, you're welcome to download the low-res shots displayed there for your personal use and if you want to purchase a high-res copy ($15 per image), just get in touch. Well worth it we reckon if you're lucky enough to have appeared in one of Dave's amazing shots! There will also be a fantastic gallery of the Kids' Race from super-vollie Josh Nicholson for you to enjoy! As soon as these galleries are available, we'll post in our Latest News section.

In the meantime, check out the podium-getters gallery we've posted on Facebook.

Thank You

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who assisted in the successful running of the event:

  • South Coast United Mountainbikers – A huge thank you to the amazing crew from SCUM - for providing what is already a fantastic course and building the bridge to provide some variety, and for devoting so much time to making the event a success.

  • Course Marshals - thanks to our fantastic SCUM volunteer marshals who were looking out for you on the track

  • Riders - thanks for helping create the fun and positive vibe that these events are known for. We’re totally stoked that you guys are doing your best to obey Rule # 35!

  • Good Samaritans – Thanks to everyone who stopped to offer assistance to other riders due to injury or mechanicals

  • Dave Bateman – our Series photographer who always delivers outstanding images, enjoy checking them out!

  • Steve Martin for the live-to-the-web, transponder timing service

  • Shoalhaven Water - for providing us with 1,000l of drinking water

  • Sita Australia - for providing rubbish and recycling bins
  • St John Ambulance – The volunteers of the St John Ambulance give up their weekends so that you can have a safe and enjoyable time. Thanks for your tireless work and enthusiasm!

  • Volunteers – We couldn't have done this without our wonderful volunteers! You’re all awesome! Thanks to Josh, Gumby, Vanessa, Alyssa, Yasmin, Russ, Catherine, Lynn, Pat, Dave, and Ross. You guys rock!

  • Vincentia High School - for providing food & drinks throughout the day on Sunday, and for braving the dust all day long helping out at the timing tent.

  • Peter and Simona from Snax on Trax for providing great coffee and delicious cupcakes!

No thanks to ...

The team whose tent was wrecked by the wind and who left it, still erected, in the forest. We noticed it as we had finished our own packup; a dejected looking tent behind where the timing tent had been. What did we do? Well of course, we took it down and left it at the rubbish bins. This took about 15 minutes, time we sorely would have liked to use for the drive home ourselves. Why the owner of this tent didn't or couldn't do that, we are completely mystified. We know from the site checks we do that the majority of our competitors are truly awesome in being responsible for their own litter and helping keep our race venues as pristine as possible. We sincerely hope that it was a genuine oversight by the people concerned.

Also our Portaloo provider informed us that one of the loos has been vandalised on the inside during the event. This is the first time that we have had a toilet damaged in the 4 years of the events. Not cool.

Series Jerseys and T-shirts - Get yours ordered!

We had an amazing response to our new Series t-shirts by Cycology and jerseys by OnTheGo. If you missed out on getting one in  your size, then you can either enter now for Round 3 and order it with your entry (we'll be re-ordering in the next week or so), or if you're not coming to Round 3 then please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to let us know what you're after and we'll include it in the order.

We've discovered that in the men's sizes both tees and jerseys are on the smaller end of the sizing chart, so if you're between sizes then it's best to go up rather than down.

Lost and Found

We came home with just one item of lost property - a child's padded vest, found in a portaloo. If you think it's yours, please get in touch with a description.

Putting our best foot forward …

The singletrack nirvana of Awaba mountain bike park is the venue for Round 3 and the crew from HMBA are looking forward to welcoming you there! Get your entry in and let the (Facebook) world know you're coming!

If you need a racing fix in the meantime, we'd like to highlight a couple of events that we are partnering with, both happening on 25 August. One is the women's only For The Birds event held at Sparrow Hill, and the other is the Back Yamma Bigfoot, a flat, fast and flowing marathon around the forests near Parkes.

And, you may have heard of Fi's version of Dry July, during which she raised funds for the National Stroke Foundation. Fi was stoked to exceed her fundraising target by receiving donations of $2331! If this is a cause you'd like to support, it's not too late! Head over to

That's it for our event wrap the "Chocolate Wrapper", and we look forward to seeing you at Awaba!
