The Chocolate Wrapper - 2012 Rock Wallaby event report

Hi to all of you who tamed the Rock Wallaby!

We've received loads of feedback about the new course and while it was still tough, everyone liked the new layout. Unsurprisingly no one asked for a refund for the missing 3km of the lap! Thanks for all the nice words about the event, it makes the weeks of hard work all the more satisfying.

We are really blessed for this race as it gets so much kind support, first and foremost we’d like to thank Wollongong MTB Club whose track makes up over half the course, they recently  built three new sections of track and helped us with the new section after the "Lost Track". They also assisted with marking the course and provided marshals. The people of Appin got right behind it again this year including the man who gave us the idea for this event, Ernie Ring. Ernie's also planted the seeds in our mind for another great and very different course next year...

Thanks also to local trail guru Grant Byrne, the Appin Dogs footy club for the use of the club house and providing catering, the 1st Appin Scouts for the great camping set up, the Williams family for allowing us to race through their property, Spearman Cycles for their mechanical support, St John Ambulance for looking after any injuries, Snax on Trax for keeping you caffeinated and fed, Finish Line, Mountain Biking Australia magazine, and Jimmy Jack Wines for their product displays, Russ and Vanessa from SCUM for doing the timing and BIG THANKS to all our fantastic volunteers – Josh, Lachie, Meg, John, Pete, Shauna, Kath – who make the event run so well and make the day fun as well! And to Kelly, for so ably taking over Fi’s role at the first few events this year – you’re an absolute legend!

If you haven't caught a report of the race here's a brief round up:

With a blisteringly fast time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 44 seconds over the 44km distance, Newcastle rider Trenton Day made it a day to remember as he convincingly won the Rock Wallaby Mountain Bike Enduro at Appin. Day established a gap early in the first of two laps and never looked back, his final margin saw him almost 5 minutes ahead of Mark Tupalski and Jon Odams.

The women's categories may have been light in numbers but they were full of talent, with Danielle Pollock taking the Open Women for the second year in a row while Nicole Lancaster triumphed in the Masters Women, and it was a double celebration for the Pollocks as Doug Pollock won the Masters men category from Simon Christie and Richard Peil. Jason Morgan finished on top of a very well-credentialed field in the Open men, edging out Brad Glennan and Jorge Baron Morris. The Junior 44km category featured a second consecutive win by Peter McKellar-Stewart.

In the single lap 22km categories Ondrej Slezak was the fastest overall and winner of the men while Alisha Houghton took it out for the women, and in the juniors Callum Carson and Nicole Hutton were the victors.

Congratulations to you all for chasing the Rock Wallaby, we hope you found it a rewarding challenge. And the winners were grinners with great prize packs from our brilliant sponsors Finish Line lube and bike care, Jimmy Jack wine, Mountain Biking Australia Magazine and Hammer Nutrition, plus Brad Glennan walked away not only with his podium prizes but the random draw prize of an expert bike fit by The Body Mechanic!

Lost Property: Not much to report except lost air from tyres and a bit of lost skin! If you did lose something please get in touch with us, and if you accidently picked up a blue cooler bag containing bidons and gels that you later found not to be yours, or if you lost a Garmin bike computer, then we'd like to hear from you.

SRAM Singletrack Mind Series: As it's just clicked over into June that means we're off to the legendary trails of Kowen in the ACT for STM Round 2 on 24 June. The mysterious Kowalski Brothers are kindly assisting us with the course and have devised a cracker with all the great descents from the Mont and reasonably mellow climbs to get back up to them. In a word, this is gonna be "fuuuuuuun!" Check out the course, and all the Round 2 info, here.

Thanks again to all you great riders, volunteers, community groups and sponsors who helped make the 2nd edition of the Rock Wallaby Enduro such a fantastic day out!
