Footprint: Chocolate Foot News, June 2014

Hello and welcome to another fine edition of Footprint!

After a long wait, the Finish Line Singletrack Mind Series has kicked off for 2014 and what an opener it was! Amazing trails, perfect weather and super solid racing all day long! The event also saw the debut of our Chocolate Foot Women's Development team who rewarded our faith in them by winning right across the board! We also welcomed Finish Line as the new headline sponsor of the Series and the addition of the solo 4 hour categories has been a raging success with 60 riders battling it out in the shorter and more intense version of the event.

We've been up to plenty on the bike ourselves, as we both went to Cairns for the UCI MTB World Cup. Joe was working for SBS's TV coverage and got a few rides in including the XCO course and Fi was getting in plenty of ride time on her new Specialized Camber Expert Carbon EVO 29er complete with SRAM XO1 gearing, XO Trail brakes and RockShox Pike fork. Needless to say Fi loves it!

STM-Finish-Line2014 Finish Line Singletrack Mind Series Round 1- Taree Trails Triumph!

That was quite a way to start the Series! We had a national XCO champion, a World 24 Solo champion but everyone came away feeling like a winner because the track was SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD! Thanks again to the incredible efforts of the Manning-Great Lakes Tip Riders for providing a truly magic track which had everyone smiling from ear to ear!

The racing was close, exciting and highly competitive, results can be found here, race report here, and Dave Bateman's photo gallery here.

2014 Finish Line Singletrack Mind Series Round 2 - It's All Go for Mogo!

While Taree was flat and fast, Mogo will serve up some tasty climbs that will reward you with some extremely delicious descents!

We're really looking forward to this round and we're hearing that loads of you are too. It's going to be a reasonably lengthy 12km track but you'll find that the distance will fly by and the downhills, such as the legendary Snake Track, will have you grinning!

We highly recommend that you get to Mogo on Saturday, get registered and pre-ride the course!

There plenty of other riding and things to do around Bateman's Bay and Mogo such as beaches, kayaking and the famous Mogo Zoo. Check the Eurobodalla Shire Tourism website for accommodation and ideas to make the most of the weekend.

Full details about the race can be found here including a track preview vid.

Chocolate Foot Racing Women's Team Launched

From our perspective as event directors we've always wanted to see bigger women's fields and we have tried to do a great deal in the past to encourage women into racing. While we have had the idea for a team for a while, this year we've finally found the right sponsor partners to make our dream a reality and we launched the Chocolate Foot Women's Development team at Taree.

We've selected 5 women with varying sporting backgrounds and cycling experience to join this project where we hope to build their skills, fitness and confidence so that they might become highly competitive racers. We also hope that by following their progress, these ladies will be an inspiration to other women and that ultimately we will see greater numbers and greater depth in the women's fields in all events and more women loving mountain biking!

You can find more info on the team and its members here.

Big thanks go out to the team's sponsor partners: Manly Cycles, Cycle & Fitness Studio, Bioathletic Sports Injury & Performance, Specialized, Ventou Custom Cycleware, Aussie Butt Cream, Hammer Nutrition and Rockpool Graphics. All without whom this project would not be possible.

Tips on Training and Racing Nutrition

1. Keep fluid intake during exercise between 475-830 ml per hour.

This is a basic requirement, and often not followed due to lack of practice during training.

FACT: In general, most athletes, under most conditions, will satisfy hydration needs with a fluid intake in the range of 590-740 ml/hour – roughly the equivalent of a standard size small or large water bottle. Lighter athletes and/or athletes exercising in cool weather conditions may only require an intake of 475-530 ml/hour. Larger athletes and/or athletes exercising under very hot and humid conditions are the ones that can consider a fluid intake in the range of 830 ml/hour, perhaps up to 890ml/hour in extreme conditions. It’s important to remember that regular fluid intake over 890-1005 ml/hourly significantly increases the potential for serious performance and health problems.
