Chocolate Foot

Footprint: Chocolate Foot News, April 2013

With the weather now perfect for riding we hope that you have been getting out as much as we have, really enjoying railing corners and enjoying beautiful vistas.

We recently led a social ride to the Convict Trail (Old North Road, Wiseman's Ferry), it was a gorgeous day and we all had a great day out on the ridges above Wisemans Ferry, enjoying the techy climbs and rock descents. The Convict 100 is coming up there soon, so good luck to all those taking on the challenge.

Since our last newsletter we have also been getting back into racing rather than organising. Bike Buller, the Mont24hr, National Series at Bright, and the fast and furious Short Track XC at St Ives Showground have all seen appearances (and even a podium or two) from Joe and Fi!

With the first round of the Singletrack Mind series coming up in less than 2 weeks we've been jolted back in to organiser mode and many of you probably are getting your team manager hat on organising your teams for the Series! The course at Taree is going to be a cracker: fast and flowy is what it's all about, about as close to flying as you can manage on a bike!

Round 1, Sunday 28 April - Kiwarrak State Forest

It's all go for Round 1 at Kiwarrak State Forest, home of the Manning Great Lakes Tip Riders MTB Club. We rode the race loop a few weekends ago and it's fast and flowy with regular passing opportunities should make everyone pretty damn happy! Check out the video here and loads of pictures here including the legendary see-saw which thankfully isn't in the race loop but well worth checking out if you like a challenge!

Big thanks to the Club who were super welcoming and have been out every weekend since buffing and improving the course, it will be in spectacular condition come race day!

There's plenty more riding there, so if you can manage it come up for a long weekend of riding, or do any number of other great activities in the area like surfing, kayaking or good old chillin' out!

We've just taken delivery of a massive $11,000 of prize schwag from our fantastic sponsors for Round 1 - which includes a RockShox SID RCT3 fork worth $920 as a draw prize for one lucky winner. We've got boxes of amazing quality product and vouchers and can't wait to give it all away! As always we'll have everything you need for a great day out in the forest - coffee, food, SRAM mechanical support, Giant demo bikes, Finish Line lube bay, Hammer Nutrition prouct to test & purchase, wine tasting from James Estate ... and Gumby is celebrating his birthday so who knows what kinda high jinks he'll be up to! We honestly can't wait to kick off this year's Series at Taree.

Full Series and Round 1 info is on the website. A reminder that Taree is one of our bonus points rounds this year, your team will get a bonus 40 points just for turning up, so book your leave passes, get yourself or your team organised, and get entered! The Chocolate Ride

It had been a while between officially-organised social rides but the one held on Sunday at Terrey Hills was an absolute cracker! The weather was perfect and a record number of 22 people came along for a social scenic cruise along the Long Trail followed by a coffee & bite to eat. These rides and the Facebook group have helped a bunch of women get into riding in a big way, with lots of rides being organised informally and people finding regular riding buddies via the group.

We and Ride In Workshop plan to make the organised rides more regular from now on and you can keep up to date by signing up for our social rides newsletter or joining our Facebook group. Note that although the focus of the group was initially to help women get into riding and find other girls to ride with, guys are also welcome on both the Facebook page and the rides (unless the ride is specified as 'women only' of course!).

Clubby Corner

New Mountain Bike Park for Wollongong! Wollongong Mountain Bike Club are working with Wollongong Council to establish a mountain bike park. The council are very keen to have a world class facility close to the city. Council have established a committee which includes WMBC to report on potential sites and models. The Wollongong park will have a DH, XC, flow/enduro and hopefully a chair lift. It won't happen overnight but the club has great support from some very prominent businesses including Cardno engineering, BHP, Carmine Services and RMB lawyers. Negotiations with major land owners and National Parks are progressing well. Hopefully WMBC can run a round of the Singletrack Mind Series and even a National Series round in the not-too-distant future!

Even though South Coast United Mountainbikers (SCUM) have some of their trails closed due to logging operations they still have a full calendar of events scheduled for this year. There are a few specialty events as well as the usual XC races and 3 and 4 hour endurance races. Check out their calendar for details. And, if you're staying in the Shoalhaven area check the SCUM Forum for social rides (look for the 'social rides' topic). These rides often use less well known trails only known to the locals.

Manning Great Lakes Tip Riders MTB Club: Based in Kiwarrak State Forest just out of Taree, the 'Tip Riders' have been riding, building and playing in forest for a little over 10 years, with the club forming in the last 3 years. With NSW Forestry’s help we are shaping a very exciting future for MTB in the Manning Valley. The forest holds over 45km of established singletrack, including tight technical riding, fast flowing sections of trail, built structures and some descents to remember! Along with Round 1 of the 2013 SRAM Singletrack Mind Series on 28 April, Kiwarrak Forest will host a round of the popular Mid-North Coast MTB series on 19 May, and various XC and All Mountain races throughout the year. For more information look up the Manning Great Lakes Tip Riders on Facebook. See you in Kiwarrak – Singletrack Nirvana!

Since forming in the middle of 2012, the Wollondilly Trailblazers MTB Club has been looking at a few options for a club track. We had four serious options, two of which individual club members have been trying to gain access to for a long time (2.5 years in one case), one that has a lot of potential and another area. While working on gaining access to these areas we were approached by Mowbray Park Farm to investigate the possibility of building a mtb track for visitors and club use! We’ve done a lot of mapping and planning, a little building, and recently took some club members on a tour of the proposed loop. Things are looking positive and we hope to have a nice track to use by the end of the year. Keep an eye out for a call for volunteers to build some trail in the near future. Check the website or see Facebook to keep up to date.

MTBA Club  Grant Scheme: Mountain Bike Australia are currently taking applications for Round 2 of the Club Grant Scheme - so if your Club could benefit from a grant of up to $4000 for initiatives such as junior development, a women's program, or a trail-based project, check out the info here (submissions close 30 June).

For The Birds - 25 August 2013

We're stoked to help support a great initiative from Canberra Off-Road Cyclists, the women's only For The Birds event! The inaugural 2012 event attracted over 100 riders last year and with a few tweaks to the format CORC hope to double that number this year! The race is held on Canberra's iconic Sparrow Hill fun, flowing trails, and with different course options on offer depending on your fitness or technical prowess there really is something for everyone! Entries to open soon but for now, put Sunday 25 August in your diary for a date with like-minded chicks at Sparrow Hill!

That's it from us for now - don't forget you can also keep up to date via our Facebook page or you can follow us on Twitter.
