Footprint: Chocolate Foot News, August 2012

Fi Mt BlancHello from sunny Yorkshire!

If you're one of our many Facebook friends you would have seen that Team Chocolate Foot has been amongst the big bergs of the French Alps. We left all the roads and the climbing to the combatants of the Tour de France who passed by our base near Albertville, instead focussing on getting down the mountains as quickly, as off-road and with as much fun as possible! With around 3000 metres of descending per day we were seriously knackered by day's end but loved every trail, vista and didn't even mind the callouses and sore braking fingers! Our hosts trailAddiction have just recently started guiding rides in the Beaufortain region which they call "Destination X", and we thoroughly recommend it as an eye-opening yet low stress way to ride some truly amazing trails in high Alps! Start drooling at and check out Destination X, and here's a little video of our singletrack adventures.

If you've been watching the Olympics you'll have been reminded what great weather Britain enjoys over summer ... so equipped with rain jackets and arm warmers we've been exploring all that England and Wales has to offer! But seriously, there's some great riding to be had here, and unlike home the local Councils and the UK Forestry Commission have a very proactive attitude towards cycling and recreational land use so, as much as it pains us to say it, we still have a few things to learn from the Mother country!

Round 2, East Kowen Forest - 24 June

Round 2 of the Singletrack Mind series at Kowen didn't disappoint ... especially if you like seeing the mercury below zero! Thankfully, once we'd all defrosted it was a magnificent winter's day in Canberra and the racing was red hot, with the Jet Cycles team putting on a very impressive performance to win overall and the Male Threes category. Other notable results included Ed McDonald continuing his sordid affair with gears and again coming out on top in the solo men, while Liz Smith put together a very consistent race in the solo women to beat Round 1 winner Janet Martin. The Clydesdale special category was a nail-biting race right to the end as Grant Johnston rolled in from his 8th and final lap as the last rider on course to immediately claim the prize!

STM 2 2012-1However the big star of the day was everyone's favourite green clay character GUMBY! While he didn't have much to say, his high fives, dancing and "Gumby good vibes" made it a day to remember, he even busted out a lap of the course! [Kindy teacher voice] We're hoping he'll come back for Round 3 in Nowra, but only if you all ask really nicely!

There were of course plenty of other great stories but the overall vibe from the race was that the course, built and designed by local legends Kowalski Brothers Trailworks, Paul Cole and Alan Anderson, was excellent, challenging, and most of all fun! Thanks again to anyone who has swung a shovel at Kowen, your work is very much appreciated!

Round 3, Coondoo Road, Nowra - 19 August

With another round of the Singletrack Mind Series fast approaching, Joe once again must bid Fi au revoir for Round 3 but fear not she will be back for the later rounds! And this should of course be a reminder to all that it's time to organise your teams and get entered before Wednesday 15 August as we'll be racing on the track that everyone loves: Coondoo Road! And if you think you've ridden the hell out of Coondoo, SCUM's trail fairies have been busy adding a new section of track so it's time to get your flow on as you swing and swoop through the serpentine curves of this Nowra classic!

James-Estate-125James Estate – More than just a winery: It is a month of openings and a new release to celebrate. Our Mountain Bike trails are now open and we are super excited! The best way to celebrate such an event is to release a brand new wine under the Reserve range. Our 2012 Reserve Fume is now available at our cellar doors. It is a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend that has been left to do its own thing. Barrel ferment on solids in older French hogsheads gives the Fume subtle smoked character. It is a lovely wine that is all about interesting funky aromas and texture on the palate.

Check out our YouTube Wattle Ave Loops as a sneak peak of the MTB trails.

Clubby Corner

South Coast United Mountainbikers have rescheduled their most talked about event of the year, the Dusk 4 Hr Enduro at Coondoo to Saturday 29 September. This event was washed out back in March and, by popular demand and even some threats, it's BACK ON. Rego from 3pm. Race start 5pm. Cost just $10. Will Josh Carlson fly back from Canada to team up with Craig Gordon to defend their crown? SCUM reckon he will when he finds out they’ve put in some more ‘Hero Dirt’ singletrack. The music will be pumping, the coffee hot, and the action sweet. Make a weekend of it and ride SCUM’s other trails Superbowl and Butterfly on the Sunday. More info at

Menai MTB Park Update

Menai continues to move forward. All the legal requirements such as Environmental Assessments, Development Applications and an Operational Plan are well underway. Further trail rationalisation, design, grading etc are also continuing, with our first working bee on the trails planned for September. We will have a core group of trail maintenance volunteers supervising other volunteer groups. This core group will be trained in aspects of Bushcare, IMBA trail building and form part of the MTB focused club. We will be looking for volunteers soon to get involved.

Interim access cannot be granted until all the above has been finalised, so please, in the meantime, continue to remain off the trails!

For further updates, please visit the Facebook page: Menai MTB Park Proposal.

That wraps up a truly international edition of Footprint! Joe is really looking forward to getting back to Oz and catching up with all of you at Nowra! We were thinking of signing off this edition with some rubbish about "channelling the Aussie Olympic spirit" but the way the Aussies have been going on two wheels at these Games, it looks like the best advice is to make like Fi, reverting to her Pommy roots, cheering on Team GB! We're sure that Nowra is set to be no less exciting than the Games, and we can't wait to see you there on 19 August!

Don't forget you can also keep up to date via our Facebook page or you can follow us on Twitter.
