Footprint: Chocolate Foot News, August 2015

Hello and welcome, time to feel the dirt through your toes in the latest edition of the Footprint!

While it's been a bit chilly of late (looking at you Canberra!), it has at least been pretty dry which means that if you put on the right number of layers (7 for the ACT or 2 by the coast) it's been a great time to be out on the bike! We've been keeping our riding fairly local and that's not a bad thing as the Northern Beaches of Sydney now boasts loads of trails including the Gahnia and Serrata trails built by NPWS. If you're visiting Sydney with your bike, drop us a line and we, or others in the local crew, would be happy to show you around. With abundant sandstone, the riding here is quite technical but a great place to hone your riding skills, should you wish to upgrade your skills we also run regular skills clinics or 1-on-1 tuition.

This is a bumper edition of Footprint, enjoy the read, and have a fabulous weekend!

2015 Finish Line Singletrack Mind Series

STM-Finish-Line

There was no doubt it was winter at Round 2 on 28 June in Wingello State Forest! While the previous day was t-shirt weather, on race day the sun struggled to break through the clouds at all and many layers were required. But there was no disappointment from riders regarding the quality of the Wingello trails and the racing was red hot as always!

Next up is the fantastic flowy trails of Coondoo Road, Nowra, for our Series finale on 30 August! It's been a part of the series for all 6 years because everyone loves Coondoo!

If you're keen to check out the Coondoo race track with a more experienced eye, the wonderful Belinda Althaus and Kelly Mapleston will be leading a reccie lap of the course at Wingello, join them at 2pm on Saturday!

Entries are open, head here for all the info and to lock in your spot!

Good Times MTB Enduro Series

good-times-enduro-350“Race the clock, ride with mates. Good times!"

We were so excited about launching the Good Times Enduro Series this year and it was clear that you guys were too! And so it is with great disappointment that we announce that this inaugural series will not be happening in 2015; at least, not as a series. We're still hopeful of pulling off one race!

We've fallen victim to that old idiom "Best laid plans ..." and here's how it happened. We had three venues lined up: Mogo in June, Taree in October, and Orange in November. In April we discovered that Taree was slated to undergo logging in October. We considered swapping locations and dates, but on further discussion with the club decided to leave Taree as a venue for this year but move the Mogo date to October when Taree would have been. So we'd be racing in Mogo in October, and Orange in November.

Upon applying to the Forestry Corp a couple of months ago for a permit for Mogo in October, we were advised that, due to a change in policy on authorisation to race on singletrack within State Forest, plus a new logging schedule, there could be no race in the Maulbrooks Road area in October. Forestry advised that they plan to rehabilitate the trails to bush and no racing or riding can take place on the singletrack! Needless to say discussions are being had, and whether or not this is the eventual outcome, the story at the moment is that the area is currently being logged, but the trails are all still there and open for riding (however directional signage has been removed). There is trucking activity along one of the main fire trails adjacent to the legendary Snake Track so please take care if you are riding there. The Eurobodalla Cyclists are really disappointed not to be welcoming riders to the first gravity enduro to be run in the area, but we are all hopeful that by next year there'll be a suitable location to run an enduro at Mogo!

So, onto Orange. Scheduled for 15 November, one of the key organisers from Orange MTB Club has had an unanticipated clash of dates so we are currently in discussions regarding an alternative date - watch this space!

As we said above, we're really disappointed that our plans for what would have been an awesome series have fallen through but we'll keep working on putting together some kick-arse locations for this style of event and we hope that this delay will only make them all the more better!

MTB Skills Clinics - 12 September and 18 October

Check out the Testimonials to see feedback from participants and the Gallery to see them tackling new terrain.

We also offer private or small group tuition, so if you can't make a group clinic but want a few pointers, This email address is being protected from spambots. These can be scheduled for any day of the week, and while we run most sessions at St Ives Showground, we are also happy to travel to a location of your choice.

We've also got a mailing list option for those who'd like to be kept informed of skills clinics dates.

Chocolate Foot Women's Development Team

porttoport chocolatefoot womens teamThe members of the inaugural Women's Development Team have had some great experiences and successes since our last newsletter! Linda raced the 4 day Port to Port MTB stage race and came an impressive 8th in Open Women General Classification against some stiff competition. Mel rode on Saturday and Sunday and came 5th and 6th respectively in Open Women, and Steph rode on Saturday and came 9th. Well done, crew! In June, Mel and her husband Luke, with fellow Traces of Nuts teammates, took on the challenge of Expedition Alaska, part of the Adventure Race World Series, and finished in 5th place. What an achievement! They certainly have some tales to tell from this epic adventure, you can hear some of them via their Facebook page. And while Mel was in Alaska for Singletrack Mind Series Round 2, Steph and Linda braved slightly warmer (but not by much, many would claim!) conditions at Wingello to take out first place in Female Pairs, making them the current series leaders!

We'll be seeking expressions of interest shortly for new members for the Choccy Foot women's team, so This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you'd like to be kept in the loop!

Finish Line Pro Chain Cleaner:
Finish Line began innovating chain cleaners back in 1988 when its patented rotating brush design set the standard. For the first time a bicycle chain could be thoroughly cleaned in a minute or two without taking it off the bike. Quick, efficient and easy to use. Since 1988 Finish Line has innovated two new generations of chain cleaners. Our new third generation chain cleaner has once again redefined the way bicycle chains are being cleaned, both in shops and at home.

Finish Line's proprietary rotating brushes are still utilized in the third generation unit. However, the exit angle has been changed from 90 degress to 47 degrees, which virtually eliminates drips and spills. An additional row of scrapper pads have been added for enhanced side-plate cleaning. A large magnet has been added to attract and hold magnetized wear particles and is located at the bottom of the chain cleaner. New shop quality plastic prevents shattering when dropped.

For cyclists who are serious about keeping their drivetrain in race-ready condition, Finish Line's Pro Chain Cleaner is a valuable piece of equipment that will make this tedious task much easier. Use once or twice a month to maximize your bicycle's chain life and enjoy a cleaner, smoother, and more efficient drivetrain.

Available in a kit with 4oz Multi Bike Degreaser for up to 8 separate cleanings & a 2oz bottle of lubricant. Also available as solo unit.

2016 and beyond

As you've probably seen there's been a fair bit of discussion of late regarding a decline in attendance numbers across pretty much all MTB events due mostly, we suspect, to the over-saturation of the market. Obviously we don't take this lightly and, as we do every year, will re-assess what we are offering.

We're confident we offer a schmick and professionally run event which is inclusive to all levels of rider whilst still attracting elite competitors. We are proud that our events attract a high female participation rate and consistently good competition in the junior categories. We're pretty sure we create a great event vibe with Joe's 'witty' commentary and the music we play. We know that we always have your back with our course marshal stations and plenty of First Aid staff on hand. We also know that as reward for your hard work you'll receive great prizes from our industry-leading sponsors, and we ensure there are plenty of give-aways throughout the day to those at the less pointy end of things! Great events attract great people and one of the joys of running events has been getting to know you all, the fantastic people who come to our races.

That said, we'd gladly receive your feedback and thoughts on what you are looking for in a race, the features you value most in your race experience, and what we should continue to do, or could do better, to help meet your desires! While we love all the positive feedback we get immediately after an event, it's only through getting your frank and considered opinions that we can progress what we do. Please email your thoughts and feedback to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

That's it from us for now, we're signing off for the weekend and heading to Thredbo for a different kind of riding - how great is the snow this season?! You can also keep up to date via our Facebook page or you can follow us on Twitter and we're posting occasional updates from our riding adventures on Instagram - search for @choccyfoot if you'd like to stay in touch that way!

Cheers

Joe & Fi
